Ten years ago I joined a gym for the first time at the age of forty. I stumbled about, didn't really know what I was doing, but figured out a basic cardio / weight training routine based on what I had read in magazines. I lost about 20 lbs, was still overweight, but thought that was the best I could do.

Three years ago I started working out with Patrick Flaherty at Metro Fitness. I initially thought having a personal trainer was a luxury, but at least I would learn proper form and technique. What I hadn't anticipated was his genuine concern for my progress and well being. I had read a lot about diets and proper nutrition, but never stuck with anything, and have always craved sugar.

Last year I decided to finally get serious about diet. Patrick would say to me, "do you live to eat, or eat to live?" I learned about Tosca Reno's "Eat Clean Diet" and her cooler plans to prepare food ahead of time. I weighed in weekly with him and tracked what I ate. I climbed more stairs than I thought I ever could, and did so repeatedly. At the end of the program I lost over 37 lbs in six weeks!

I am a healthier person now at fifty than I was ten, twenty, even thirty years ago. My physician tells me I look "fantastic," my vitals are very good, and I'm no longer overweight. I never ran a race in my life; I now routinely run races, and finished my second marathon this past May in under 4 hours.
